Kentucky Derby 2020: Authentic wins, gives Baffert tying 6th victory

Since fans won't be able to descend on Churchill Downs for this year's Kentucky Derby, here's how they can catch all the action.

Authentic's Hall of Fame trainer, Bob Baffert, now has six career Kentucky Derby victories, tying Ben Jones for most all-time. The bay colt ran 1¼ miles in 2:00.61 under John Velazquez, who earned his third Derby victory.

Tiz the Law had been the heavy favorite at 3/5 odds, while Authentic was at 8 to 1. But Authentic found another gear and pulled away from the Belmont victor.

Churchill Downs officials attributed the decline in handle to the lack of on-site wagering, fewer horses in the race and a prohibitive favorite.

Baffert's other horse, Thousand Words, got spooked in the paddock, reared up and fell on his side shortly before post time. Baffert said his assistant, Jim Barnes, was injured in the fall.

Belmont Stakes victor Tiz the Law looked well placed to overhaul the 8-1 shot as they made it around the final turn but could not close the gap and finished second in the 146th running of the race. Honor A.P. was the second odds on favorite to win at 7/1, and finished fourth. The field of 15 was the smallest since 1998.

The Kentucky Derby was postponed from its traditional first Saturday in May due to the pandemic and the Triple Crown races are being run out of order this year for the first time.

Belmont Stakes victor Tiz the Law is the favorite to win Saturday's race.
