Pac-12 announces football season will begin in November

"From the beginning of this crisis, our focus has been on following the science, data and counsel of our public health and infectious disease experts", said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott.

As far as football, the Salt Lake Tribune reports teams that do not make the championship game will still play on December 18, but against teams in the opposite division with the same divisional standing.

The question then becomes, could a 7-0 Pac-12 team get to the College Football Playoff?

Approval from the state and local public health officials was the reason why the Pac-12 made a decision to restart sports, which will feature no fans at sporting events taking place on campus, according to the conference.

Meanwhile the Pac-12 has had schools not training with the last word coming in August there would be no football until January. The Pac-12 announced early this month it had acquired daily COVID-19 testing for its members. Student-athletes will be administered one antigen test each week and all positive cases will be confirmed with a PCR test.

The ACC and Big-12 have already started their seasons with the SEC kicking its season off this weekend officially with games. "Our CEO Group has taken a measured and thoughtful approach to today's decision, including extensive consultation with stakeholders on the evolving information and data related to health and safety".

The Southeastern Conference begins play this weekend, joining the Big 12, Atlantic Coast Conference and three others that have been up and running for weeks. The Ducks were No. 9 in the preseason AP Top 25, though it's unclear how voters will assess them when they drop into the campaign with many rivals from other conferences already having played five or more games.

Surely, people will continue complaining about the Pac-12.

After the Big Ten's announcement last week, Scott quickly pointed to governmental restrictions in California and OR that prevented the six Pac-12 schools in those states from practicing.

A full schedule for all 12 teams in the conference is expected to be unveiled this week.

"Our schools are going to have the opportunity to be in the conversation, we'll have every opportunity", Scott said.

California's Santa Clara County, where Stanford is located, required the school to submit a safety plan before it would give the team the go-ahead to practice.

There is still work to be done on that front, now in Colorado.

The Pac-12 said teams with health approval can begin practicing immediately.
