PUBG among 118 Chinese apps banned

Popular gaming app PUBG Mobile is among 118 more Chinese apps that the government blocked today as the border tensions in Ladakh heat up again.

In yet another move cracking down on Chinese apps in India, the government has today made a decision to ban another 118 apps of Chinese origin. "Today we have also banned 118 more apps which were a problem for your security, surveillance.data", Prasad said while addressing a virtual conference of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum.

The game ranks among top five smartphone games in the world with over 734 million downloads.

Besides PUBG, which stands for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, the latest apps banned include AppLock, Alipay, WeChat Work and Baidu. "This move will safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and Internet users". It has millions of users, especially among the young, in India.

During the coronavirus lockdown, PUBG rose to even greater heights with the mobile version pushing the live game streaming industry in India with a large number of content creators earning good money.

It added, "The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures".

As with the previous list of banned apps, India did not specifically say that the apps were being banned because they were Chinese, and it did not mention the country in its announcement.

In announcing the ban, New Delhi said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology received complaints about the misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms "for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India".

Over 275 Chinese apps had been under scrutiny for alleged violation of national security and citizens' privacy.

MEITY has pointed out that the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and the Ministry of Home Affairs had also sent an "exhaustive recommendation" for blocking these "malicious" apps. This time around however, PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite are both on the list.
