Rahm secures playoff win at Olympia Fields with 66-foot putt

Rahm secures playoff win at Olympia Fields with 66-foot putt

After Dustin Johnson sunk a weaving, 43-foot birdie putt on the 18th green to force a playoff with Rahm, the world No. 2 went one better on the first hole of the pair's shootout.

World number 17 Woods hit only nine of 14 fairways and just 13 of 18 greens in regulation on a course that played like a US Open layout with fast greens and dense rough.

"I was kind of laughing at my putt, because it was one of those where you - you're not really thinking you're going to make it", Johnson said after he shot a closing 67 to finish locked with Rahm on four-under-par 276.

"Yesterday was just trying to finish strong and get myself in contention, and once I teed off today with the good weather and how I started striping it the first few holes I knew I had a chance", said Rahm.

Scott dropped four shots in his last four holes during a final-round five-over-par 75 at Olympia Fields to miss the cut for this week's lucrative 30-man Tour Championship in Atlanta in dramatic fashion.

The world number one is now tied for third with overnight leader Hideki Matsuyama.

Only seven players made par or better for the tournament, with Joaquin Niemann and Hideki Matsuyama the best of the rest on two under, a shot ahead of Tony Finau who closed with a 65. They were the only five players under par at Olympia Fields.

Canada's Mackenzie Hughes had reason to celebrate, too.

Defending FedEx Cup victor Rory McIlroy acknowledged being distracted over the last few weeks but says it is because he is ready to walk out on the season-ending Championships to attend the birth of his first child. Though he is comfortably in the field at next week's Tour Championship, McIlroy may ultimately opt to withdraw from the chance to defend his FedExCup title, depending on the timing of the birth of his daughter.

Adam Long and Kevin Streelman were bumped out, and Long suffered the worst of those fates.

Then there's the always newsworthy Tiger Woods, whose FedExCup Playoffs run is in jeopardy after a Saturday 72 dropped him into a tie for 55th at 10-over.

The 36-year-old American, who won last week's Northern Trust event with a 30-under total, was one behind overnight. For the first time in 10 years, Woods went an entire tournament shooting over par in all four rounds. He now gets two weeks off before the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, and Olympia Fields proved to be a good test for that.
