Ring introduces security cameras for cars

Ring will let you setup pre-determined flight paths, so that there won't be much (any?) manual control of the drone in your house. Ring has also announced that its new product will be compatible with any auto manufacturer. The camera only works when it's flying, and it can be programmed to take off when a disturbance is detected.

The Amazon-owned company revealed new vehicle security products and services as part of Amazon's big devices unveiling Thursday: Ring auto Alarm, Ring vehicle Cam, and Ring Connect.

The company also announced a auto security device, $60 (roughly Rs. 4,400) Ring vehicle Alarm, that sounds an alarm when a break-in or bump is detected.

Siminoff explained that the Ring Always Home Cam is designed with privacy and security as foundational considerations.

It can't be manually controlled and in normal use, it will fly to the room in which a connected Ring Alarm sensor had been triggered, then fly back to the dock after recording the video evidence.

The camera has a battery life of about five minutes; it's created to make short trips of about one minute each. Recently Ring has been found to form partnerships with police forces in certain cities in the United States, which can in some circumstances give them access to people's private video and audio streams recorded by their Ring devices. When it's not patrolling your rec room, "it remains in the dock where the camera is physically blocked", Ring says. It will also make a sound in flight to alert that it's recording, Ring said.

In something out of a dystopian film depicting an authoritarian future or an episode of Black Mirror, Ring has launched its first in-home security drone.

In the US, Ring has partnered with more than 400 local police forces to share footage from home cameras - an arrangement that has caught some camera owners by surprise and raised privacy questions.

Of course, this idea might raise a few suspicious eyebrows, and Ring goes to a lot of effort to assure everyone that it's not a security disaster waiting to happen. Google's Nest smart home cameras have suffered similar attacks.

The new products should start hitting the market starting next year.

Ring said today that it will also activate end-to-end-encryption for videos later this year.
