Tenet nears $150 million mark worldwide

However, movie theaters in many states and cities - including Los Angeles and New York City - remain closed due to social distancing guidelines and phased reopening, resulting in the $20 million opening; overseas, where many countries have a better handling of the coronavirus and thus received an earlier opening for Tenet, the film has so far grossed over $150 million in global box office.

The highly anticipated Christopher Nolan film, which opened in China to $30 million this weekend, added $78.3 million globally in its second weekend of worldwide release (a 36% drop), playing on almost 53,000 screens across 46 markets.

The United States release hopes to capitalise on the important Labour Day weekend, with the holiday falling on yesterday.

With the film boasting a massive $200 million production budget, with several millions also spent to promote the film, the studio may indeed need a marathon to turn a profit on Tenet. Playing in 2,810 theaters across the country (minus major markets like New York City and Los Angeles), Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic earned an estimated $20.2 million, with $2.8 million coming specifically from IMAX screens.

The film, which stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, earned $20.2 million from 2,810 theaters, earning a solid $7,188 per-screen average. Audiences gave the film a "B" CinemaScore, lower than usual for Nolan's filmography.

But without much competition from other Hollywood movies, Warner Bros.is optimistic that Tenet will play in theatres for months to come. Mulan, Disney's reimagining of 1998 cartoon, is skipping US theaters and launching this weekend on Disney Plus.

In areas where Disney Plus is not available, Mulan is opening on the big screen. If it could have held a little bit higher of a percentage over two, three, maybe even four weekends, it would have certainly been a better look for the movie and may have helped the film kickstart the slow trek to profitability.

In weeks since theatres have started to resume business, a handful of new releases, such as The New Mutants, Russell Crowe's road-rage thriller Unhinged and The Personal History of David Copperfield starring Dev Patel, have debuted.

In fourth behind it was the 2019 Japanese mystery "Masquerade Hotel" directed by Masayuki Suzuki, which opened to $1.4 million. Through Monday, the movie is projecting $11.67 million total. Tenet is also the only major release scheduled for the remainder of September, with Wonder Woman 1984 not arriving until October 2nd (as of now).
