Trump wanted to downplay 'deadly' virus, Woodward book says

Legendary journalist Bob Woodward has a new book on the way and this time, Donald Trump sat with him for a series of 18 separate interviews, reportedly as an attempt to make himself look better than how he came off in Woodward's last book, Fear.

In one of the 17 on-the-record interviews Mr Woodward conducted with Mr Trump for the book, the US President admits to minimising the threat from the coronavirus at the outset of a pandemic which has gone on to take almost 200,000 lives in the United States.

Matthew Pottinger, O'Brien's deputy, told Trump the world faced a crisis on par with the 1918 flu pandemic, which killed about 50 million people, Woodward wrote.

In a CNN report on the interview, Woodward says he expected the president to talk about impeachment, since he had just been acquitted by the Senate.

"I wanted to always play it down", Trump told Woodward in mid March, CNN reported.

"I wanted to always play it down".

"It goes through the air", Trump said in a February 7 call with Woodward. Later that month, he suggested wearing face masks was an act of patriotism. "It's not as if we all thought Trump was doing a great job on COVID & only now realize we were wrong". The official White House transcript shows that Trump was explaining how COVID-19 was different than Ebola when he made this comment.

"I don't want people to be frightened", he said.

"He had the information", Biden said during a campaign event in MI.

Woodward wrote that Trump said he was impressed with Kim when he first met the North Korean leader in Singapore in 2018 and that Kim was "far beyond smart".

Said Trump, "It's also more deadly than your, you know, you, even your strenuous flus". Trump was out there saying 'Don't worry, it will go away, ' he's holding rallies, and Bob Woodward's like, 'This is too good.

"Can you take it off, because I cannot hear you?" Could they have done things I couldn't do?

However, "Rage" will give fresh ammunition to the Democrats arguing that Trump failed to prepare Americans for the severity of the coronavirus outbreak or to lead them into a proper response. "It was a life or death betrayal of the American people". "No, I don't feel that at all". Trump, who is seeking a reelection in the November polls, claimed that people of America "don't like her".

However, opinion polls show some two-thirds of Americans disapprove of Trump's actions.

"Well, I think there is everywhere", Trump said. "Now I don't know what to think". "Or less here than many places". "This is deadly stuff".

Reuters reporter Jeff Mason, who was wearing a black mask, asked Trump about the allegations in The Atlantic that he insulted dead soldiers during his a to France.

This is not the first time the U.S. leader and Mason have clashed over a mask.

Mr Woodward's new book, titled "Rage", is due to be published later this month.

"That's what we're showing them", Mattis said in the book.
