University of MI among top public schools in latest U.S

Johns Hopkins University has again been recognized as one of the nation's top universities in the annual U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges rankings, the longest-running and most widely cited assessment of U.S. colleges and universities. The 2021 rankings - released Sunday night - list a total of 389 schools.

The undergraduate engineering ranking was based on peer assessment surveys, University spokesperson Jon Yates told The Daily, meaning they're based exclusively on the judgment of deans and senior faculty at peer institutions.

Several Kansas schools also ranked among the top regional universities and colleges in the Midwest. "And we appreciate the remarkable efforts by our students, faculty, and staff to continue pursuing that mission energetically, imaginatively, and passionately while working to protect the health and well-being of our entire community amid the COVID-19 pandemic".

Earlier this summer, UM once again topped the list of top USA public universities, according to the QS World University Rankings for 2020-21.

Missouri State University in Springfield also ranked between 298th and 389th, and nabbed the No. 90 spot for schools with the best social mobility. By design, the Best Value Schools rankings place significant emphasis on affordability for students who may be eligible for need-based aid.

Pell Grant-eligible students now constitute around 24 percent of entering classes at the University.

The university of almost 20,000 undergraduate students also ranked 60th among public schools, 68th among most innovative schools and 86th among best colleges for veterans, according to the report. For 2020, U.S. News had ranked Princeton No. 1 in both categories, but in this week's lists, the University tied for fourth in undergraduate teaching and came out second for best value.

U.S. News compiles its data from its own surveys and third-party reporting.

Social factors such as athletics and student life weren't considered.

Pepperdine remains in the top 50 for "Best Value Schools" and "Most Innovative Schools", ranking 46 and 50, respectively. The data used in the 2021 rankings pertain to student and faculty cohorts that predate the pandemic. Previously, colleges that did not require standardized tests, such as the SAT and ACT, were ineligible for consideration. The rankings evaluate colleges across 16 quantitative and qualitative measures, including graduation and retention rates, admissions statistics, faculty resources, alumni giving, and assessments completed by peer institutions and high school guidance counselors.

The University received several rankings in the latest edition, including Best Science Lab Facilities (#14), Most Active Student Government (#14), Most Popular Study Abroad Program (#17), Best Career Services (#18); and Best-Run Colleges (#18). NU has moved up steadily in the ranks in recent years, "thanks to its dedication to promoting student excellence" and its status as a top-tier research university, the release said.

The U.S. News college rankings, however, have faced widespread criticism and scrutiny from leaders in higher education.
