World's Most Popular Game Banned From Google Play

The game had more than 350 million registered players as of May.

This move takes away Google's 30% cut on in-app purchases, which companies like Apple and Google are probably not fans of.

As for the iOS users, those who have already downloaded Fortnite can still access the game, but new downloads are disabled.

Epic enabled a feature in its app which was not reviewed or approved by Apple, and they did so with the express intent of violating the App Store guidelines regarding in-app payments that apply to every developer who sells digital goods or services. Users meanwhile can still use Epic's in-app payment system.

Earlier on Thursday Epic Games offered to lower price points in the Fortnite game by 20 percent, also introducing a new in-app direct-payment option on iOS and Android systems, with the option of purchasing through the App Store remaining in place. The filing primarily focuses on how Google makes it more hard to sideload applications than installing apps from the Play Store, but there are a few suprising claims, including how Google supposedly blocked OnePlus from distributing the Epic Games app on its phones.

"A customer choosing to purchase or switch to a non-Apple device loses access to these services, leading to increased costs a customer must face when choosing to leave Apple's ecosystem", Epic Games is cited as saying in its statement.

In the parody, which quickly garnered hundreds of thousands of views, a female Fortnite fighter hurls a unicorn-shaped club to smash a screen on which an Apple-headed character speaks of "the anniversary of the platform unification directives".

Google declined to comment, while Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

"Epic's lawsuit alleges that Apple has become a 'behemoth seeking to control markets, block competition and stifle innovation, '" Ian Sherr and Richard Nieva write for CNET. Needless to say, the newer the iPhone, the bigger the price. 'Apple's size and reach far exceeds that of any technology monopolist in history'.

"Epic is not seeking any monetary relief, but rather only an order enjoining Google from continuing to impose its anti-competitive conduct on the Android ecosystem", it said in its lawsuit.

Facebook, which has always been at odds with Apple over privacy issues, seized on the backlash to attack the commissions too.

"However, we welcome the opportunity to continue our discussions with Epic and bring Fortnite back to Google Play", Google spokesperson Dan Jackson said in a statement. In 2018, MacLeod explained, Epic launched its own PC gaming store, the Epic Games Store. "Not only has Epic Games enlisted powerhouse antitrust lawyers, including a former US assistant attorney general in the Justice Department's antitrust division under Barack Obama; the suit also comes at a time when scrutiny of tech giants' market power is at an all-time high", Cecilia D'Anastasio writes for Wired. "The questions directed at Cook largely focused on the App Store", D'Anastasio adds.

"Suing Apple, in particular, serves two goals for Epic: winning in legal court and winning in the court of public opinion, said Rebecca Haw Allensworth, a professor of antitrust at Vanderbilt Law School".
