Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation hearing

Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation hearing

It's that utterance from California Sen.

Judge Amy Coney Barrett, U.S. President Donald Trump's nominee to the Supreme Court, attends a meeting with U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) on Capitol Hill in Washington on October 1, 2020. Barrett's views, he said on "Fox News Sunday", "make her not qualified to serve on the Supreme Court".

Barrett, President Donald Trump's candidate to are successful Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, provided the talks- a lecture and a workshop- in 2013 in her capability as a law teacher at the University of NotreDame The workshop was co-sponsored by the school's Right to Life club and constitutional research studies small, and the lecture was held by the law school's Jus Vitae club. The nomination poses a politically risky test for lawmakers as they try to probe Barrett's views on issues of abortion, health care access and gay marriage without running afoul of the Constitution's prohibition against a religious test for public officials.

"She doesn't come unbiased and that's why she should recuse herself", he said. It is scheduled to begin Monday.

Additional paperwork is not unusual, the committee said.

Republicans who control the Senate are moving at a breakneck pace to seat Barrett before the November 3 election, in time to hear a high-profile challenge to the Affordable Care Act and any election-related challenges that may follow voting.

"Courts have a vital responsibility to enforce the rule of law, which is critical to a free society", wrote Barrett, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono said in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday that Barrett's religious views were "irrelevant".

"Her views on reaching back and reconsidering and overturning long-settled precedent are not just extreme, they're disqualifying", said Sen.

Democrats are still fuming that McConnell is hurrying to confirm Barrett as the election approaches, after blocking consideration of Democratic President Barack Obama's nominee to fill a 2016 Supreme Court vacancy during an election year.

Democrats have made clear that they will press Barrett on health care, especially with the imminent Supreme Court arguments, and abortion, among other issues where her vote could push the court further to the right.

The balancing act could prove hard.

Republicans command a definite 53-47 majority in the Senate.

Republicans have preemptively declared any discussion of Barrett's faith out of bounds.

On the Republican side, Sen.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said there's no "religious litmus test" for a judge, nor any truth to the idea that Democrats oppose judicial candidates due to their religion. Kamala Harris, a committee member and the party's vice presidential nominee.

A Catholic, she says she believes in the "power of prayer".

Columbia University law professor Katherine Franke said that asking Barrett how she would handle "an irreconcilable conflict between the commitment she's made to religious law and the commitment she's made to secular law" would be acceptable. Around 100 people, including Barrett, signed the document. Republicans, too, asked questions related to her Catholicism.

"I call on you and every member of the Democratic caucus to publicly reject Sen".

"Her religion is immaterial, irrelevant", Sen.

Both Grassley and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, have been on cable news and Twitter denouncing Democrats for a "smear campaign" against Barrett. Cruz said it was "obviously of relevance".

Her personal story also will be a frequent topic for Republicans asking questions.

To even attempt "to refute a charge of being anti-Catholic", as Republicans have alleged, "is playing on their turf", Gehring said.
