AstraZeneca, J&J resuming U.S. tests of COVID-19 vaccines

AstraZeneca Plc and Johnson & Johnson plan to resume Covid-19 vaccine clinical trials that had been halted by US regulators, putting research into two of the leading candidates for a coronavirus inoculation back on track.

An independent board investigates when a participant becomes ill during a vaccine trial.

The Johnson & Johnson phase 3 trials, which started on 23 September with the aim to enroll 60,000 volunteers, are expected to restart as soon as early next week, said Paul Stoffels, chief scientific officer at the company, according to Stat News.

Testing of AstraZeneca's vaccine candidate had been paused early last month, while Johnson & Johnson paused its tests last week.

Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson is also preparing to resume its late-stage trial on Monday or Tuesday, the company said in a statement.

In the Johnson & Johnson trial, which was paused on October 12, a man who received a vaccination suffered a stroke that may have been triggered by an infection.

Netanyahu wished the scientists success at a cabinet meeting earlier in the day and said the government was also working to bring vaccines from overseas to be prepared.

According to AstraZeneca, it is not unusual for some trial participants to fall ill during these kinds of trials, but it has been deemed safe to continue by the main United States regulator.

The AstraZeneca trial is being co-developed at Britain's Oxford University, and overseas drug trials have continued. An independent committee investigated the case of a man in the trial who suffered a stroke and concluded it was not related to the vaccine, according to two individuals familiar with the trial who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The vaccine, the ministry said, has already tested well on a number of animal models and the IIBR has produced more than 25,000 doses for the first and second phases of the clinical trials.

"We are in active discussions with more than 10 countries that have shown an interest in COVAXIN", he said.

Besides, Bharat Biotech, indigenously developed vaccine candidate by Zydus Cadila Ltd is in Phase 2 of human clinical trials.

Ric Erwin, chairman of the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas, called the news "extremely disappointing", and said that "this was our greatest hope for Christmas 2020, and now it looks like it won't happen".

Regulators wanted to check to make sure any problems could not have been caused by the vaccines.
