Chelsea vs Southampton: Blues suffer major injury blow ahead of EPL clash

Mendy, 28, has returned to Chelsea after injuring his thigh in Senegal training, his national federation announced Thursday and the Premier League club confirmed Friday.

But his time with Senegal was cut short after sustaining an injury in training on Wednesday.

And according to The Athletic, Mendy believes he can be available again for the Champions League tie with Sevilla on October 20 which is then followed by a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

Mendy, who joined Chelsea for a reported £22m from French club Stade Rennes last month, has returned to London and will undergo further tests.

Mendy has sustained the problem during training and will now miss Senegal's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Morocco and Mauritania in the coming days, with a statement confirming the goalkeeper having been sent back to Chelsea for further examinations.

Chelsea next host Southampton on October 17 when the league resumes following the worldwide break.

Given his importance, Chelsea recalled Mendy back to London for immediate treatment.

The Senegalese keeper had made two starts for Chelsea, blanking Crystal Palace in Premier League play after a 1-1 draw with Spurs in the League Cup saw the Blues ousted in penalties.

The Spaniard kept a clean sheet against Portugal on Wednesday and Chelsea manager Frank Lampard could have a selection headache when Southampton visit.

The 28-year-old was brought in by Frank Lampard to address the goal-keeping unit, with Kepa Arrizabalaga coming under vast criticism in recent months.
