The district said all students and staff who were in contact with the student are quarantining, and those at home will use remote learning until they return to in-person learning.
Sherburne County's positivity rate is at 16.20 per 10,000 people which allows elementary to remain in person, with middle schools and high schools in hybrid.
The new model blends face-to-face learners with remote learners into the same class under the direction of the home school classroom teacher.
It follows a similar move announced Wednesday by the York Region Catholic District School Board, which said it will begin combining online and in-person classes October 13.
"Given the various operational and staffing challenges faced in the current remote learning model, and the need to find a solution that is sustainable for the remainder of the school year, a decision has been made in the best interest of all elementary students", Battista said.
The board will no longer require specific re-entry dates throughout the school year.
"This change is necessary to ensure all students have access to the programs offered in the DPCDSB and to provide flexibility regarding learning modes in this time of uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic", she said.
"Since the start of the school year, we have received numerous inquiries from families requesting to move their child from in class to remote learning", she said. For remote learners, the new teacher will reach out to parents directly on October 13 to provide login information for the virtual learning environment.
Students can return to school when they are symptom-free, without the use of medications, on Wednesday, October 21.
