East Troublesome Fire Moves Into Rocky Mountain National Park

There are some concerns that the flames will merge into a single fire, but Noel Livingston, East Fire Leader, said he doesn't see that happening now.

The Pine Gulch fire, which was once the largest wildfire in the state before its magnitude exceeded the Cameron Peak fires and the annoying fires of the East, is the only major fire this year that has been 100% contained. Massive smoke plumes from Colorado's fires reached into the stratosphere, shrouding the sun and turning skies orange as far away as Minnesota and Wisconsin.

As of Friday morning, the fire was measured to be 170,163 acres and was five percent contained. So, I don't want to say that it can not be. The fire forced the Grand Lake town and surrounding communities to leave.

"We're not withholding information".

Parts of Northern California remain under red flag warnings. "I've been through many of these areas up in there and things change every pasture that I go".

Lyle and Marylin Hileman, ages 86 and 84, didn't want to leave the home they had spent many years with their family in, the sheriff said.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis met with evacuees and fire managers as he toured the area on Friday. Years later, they would buy the property adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Peter Comer who was working a seasonal job at the YMCA in Estes Park said he and some friends weren't expecting to evacuate until the alert was issued.

"We tried to get ahead of it to get everyone safely out in an orderly fashion", said Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokesman David Moore, noting the community is served by three highways. He said the traffic was so bad they were stuck downtown for two hours.

The fire, which started on October 14, was 14% contained as of Saturday.

Allowing people to get back into the area to assess damage is something that will take time and happen once it's safe to do so, Schroetlin said, adding that they will also continue to watch USA 40 between Hot Sulphur Springs and Granby.
