Fauci: Trump's rapid recovery 'amplifies' misunderstanding of Covid-19

In a memo released on Saturday night by the White House, Navy Commander Dr Sean Conley said Trump met the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention criteria for safely discontinuing isolation and that by "currently recognised standards" he was no longer considered a transmission risk.

Dr Anthony Fauci says his comment was taken out of context and without his permission Trump's campaign team.

The 30-second spot uses older remarks from Dr Fauci in a way that suggests he was praising the president.

In a CNN interview on Monday, Fauci, director of the National Institutes for Allergies and Infectious Diseases, said: "I think it's really unfortunate and really disappointing that they did that".

The comments came as Fauci has intensified his criticism of the White House's response to the crisis in the wake of President Donald Trump testing positive for Covid-19.

Fauci added that he has been attempting to educate people-primarily younger adults-that the virus cannot only threaten their life, but the lives of others. And, indeed, the clip itself is taken from a March interview Fauci did on Fox News, in which he was speaking more broadly about the efforts that federal public health officials and the White House's coronavirus task force have been undertaking to respond to the pandemic.

Mr Trump begins a full-on campaign burst on Monday with a big rally in Sanford, Florida, before moving on to Pennsylvania and Iowa.

"I can't imagine that anybody could be doing more", Fauci said in the ad.

Fauci said, "We're in a bad place now and we have to change that". "We have done a "phenomenal" job, according to certain governors".

"We're all glad that the president of the United States did not suffer any significant consequences of it", Fauci said.

"In my almost five decades of public service, I have never publicly endorsed any political candidate".

Earlier on Monday, senior Trump administration officials briefing reporters by telephone, said Americans should be cautiously optimistic about the US response to the coronavirus, and that there was no need for society to be paralyzed with extensive lockdowns.

"The words spoken are accurate, and directly from Dr. Fauci's mouth", Tim Murtaugh, the campaign's communications director, said in a statement.

In the months before contracting COVID-19, Trump held several campaign rallies during which many of his supporters didn't wear masks or observe social distancing.

During a CNN interview, Fauci was asked whether he was concerned about people gathering at the Trump rallies. We have seen that in congregational setting situations where there are many people without a mask, the data speaks for itself. The campaign also hands out hand sanitizer and performs temperature checks, but 40% to 45% of people with COVID-19 are thought to not show symptoms of the disease. "That's not very hard to do, and it should not interfere with getting the economy open again".
