Moon condoles death of S.Korean official

Seoul on Tuesday concluded the man, who had gambling debts, swam against unfavourable currents with the help of a life jacket and a floatation device, indicating that he meant to resettle in North Korea.

The missing official's brother met with foreign press later Tuesday and issued a plea to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for return of the dead body, while denying his sibling meant to defect to the North.

The official told the North Korean troops he wanted to defect, Yoon said, adding that the troops knew the official's personal details, including his name, age, hometown and height.

However, North also warned South to resist their naval intrusions in the North Korean waters.

Yoon did not elaborate.

Citing intelligence sources, Seoul said the man - named only as Lee - was found adrift by North Korean troops who interrogated him in the water before shooting him and setting fire to his body as a precaution against coronavirus.

"We are now carrying out the search with an increase in vessels and personnel today as well", the official said.

Yoon said the official had run up debt of more than 58 million won ($49,600) but it was still unclear whether he sought to flee because of that.

The man's brother, Lee Ray-jin, said he had got a new boat so it must have been an accident and there was no reason for the defect.

"The government is hastily framing my brother with a North Korea defection", Lee said.

What All Kim Jong-un Said In Apology?

In them, Kim Jong-un said he understood "more than anyone the kind of pressure and hardship" required to overcome the pandemic and damage from recent typhoons. Seoul reported the man was shot then his body was doused in petrol and set alight.

President Moon Jae-in's administration, meanwhile, called on the communist state to participate in a joint investigation into the killing and to reopen a military hotline to facilitate the probe. Mr. Suh said during a press briefing, "The troops could not locate the unidentified trespasser during a search after firing the shots, and burned the device under national emergency disease prevention measures". But it did not say whether the notification included Kim's apology.

The statement came hours after the North accused the South of violating its territorial waters.

"It also fits with the assessment that North Korea wants a deal involving sanctions relief, in which case inter-Korean cooperation would be crucial for Pyongyang", he stated. Pyongyang remains mum on the request but said Sunday it would begin its own search for the body.
