He says the restrictions will apply in the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa. "I know first-hand how hard it can be".

In his memo, Tooley said any more pop-up testing centres need to be coordinated with him to ensure there is lab capacity to handle the tests done. Each resident is encouraged to designate two essential caregivers.

"Protecting the health and safety of Ontarians, especially those who are at higher-risk like seniors and residents living in long-term care homes, is our top priority", said Minister Elliott.

And that could prevent people safely visiting their loved ones during the holidays.

The public's willingness to follow those guidelines will determine if this is "a wave or a tsunami", he said.

For the province's hospitals, the challenge is to avoid what happened during the initial wave of the pandemic, when many non-COVID-19 treatments and procedures were postponed to keep beds open.

Expect Ontario's second wave of the coronavirus to be worse than the original, warns Premier Doug Ford.

The announcement will begin at approximately 1 p.m.

With staff already stretched thin, Tamblyn Watts said family members are a stopgap.

"We saw the impacts of wave one in our long-term care homes", said Minister of Health, Dr. Merrilee Fullerton.

The government continues to look at innovative solutions to provide more care where and when people need it.

Association President Anthony Dale said hospitals could become overwhelmed with patients if such action isn't taken.

The Ontario government is also investing close to $540 million in the sector to help with staffing, HVAC systems, PPE and support homes. The elderly continue to see lower levels of transmission with the oldest age demographic tracked by the province (those 80 and above) accounting for just 13 of the new cases.

"As we have said from the outset of the pandemic, everyone who needs a test must be able to access a test".

"Most of the experts are on the sidelines screaming into the Twitter echo chamber and we are all going to suffer because of this", he said.

"Ford said the province will inject "$30 million for additional infection control staffing and training for existing staff.

The province is reporting 554 new COVID-19 cases in Ontario today.

This comes a day after the province reported a record daily increase of 700 confirmed cases. The majority of cases were in Toronto (288), Peel Region (97), Ottawa (64) and York Region (41).

The projections come as Southwestern Ontario's largest hospital extended the life of its Western Fair Agriplex COVID-19 field hospital by one month, as the second wave of COVID-19 ramps up in the London area.
