Post-election protests put Kyrgyzstan on brink of revolt

Kyrgyzstan is facing political unrest after opposition groups seized control of government buildings during protests over parliamentary elections.

China has always respected the development path chosen by the Kyrgyz people in line with their national conditions, Hua said, noting that China firmly supports the policies and measures adopted by Kyrgyzstan in safeguarding its independence, sovereignty and security, and firmly opposes external forces' interference in Kyrgyz internal affairs.

One person has been killed and more than a thousand have sought medical help since the unrest broke out, as vigilante units formed by Bishkek residents scuffled with protesters and looters.

The People's Coordination Council set up by several Kyrgyz opposition parties said on October 7 it was assuming all state powers and dissolving parliament in a rift with its former allies who sought power transfer through the legislature.

Local news website 24.kg said the commission took the decision at a meeting held after the storming of the government headquarters. Several opposition politicians urged them to install a provisional cabinet to legitimise a transfer of power.

Kyrgyzstan borders China and is a close ally of Russian Federation.

Kyrgyzstan, which borders China and is a close ally of Russian Federation, has always been a platform for geopolitical competition between Moscow, Washington and Beijing and has a history of political volatility: two of its presidents have been toppled by revolts in the past 15 years.

Footage appeared to show parts of the parliament building in the capital of Bishkek on fire early Tuesday, and the front steps were littered with papers that opposition supporters had thrown from the building.

Meanwhile, Kyrgyz opposition politician and former high-ranking security official Kursan Asanov has declared himself acting interior minister.

Supporters of Atambayev - a former ally turned foe of Jeenbekov - said that they planned to hold a rally on Friday, and called on citizens to "prevent the helpers" of Jeenbekov and his family coming to power.

The Central Election Commission canceled the results of elections Sunday in the face of large protests.

Riskeldi Mombekov, the opposition candidate in the presidential election from the Ata Mekan party, said that the president promised fair elections, but did not keep his word.

Jeenbekov hasn't received Boronov's resignation letter yet, the president's spokeswoman told Interfax on Thursday.

Kyrgyzstani Prime Minister Kubatbek Boronov has resigned from office after just a few months on the job, amid protests and riots in Bishkek against election parliamentary election results.

Japarov was freed from jail by protesters late Monday during a tumultuous night of unrest that also saw former president Almazbek Atambayev released.

Opposition groups have seized several other buildings, including Bishkek's mayor's office, and appointed acting national security chief, state prosecutor and capital commander, Reuters reports. In addition, they released former president of the country Atambayev and ex-prime minister Isakov from prison.

Several provincial governors have resigned, according to local media reports which said public rallies had begun on Tuesday in several provincial centres, a lot of them anti-Government.

Jeenbekov's supporters were gathering in the southern city of Osh, the same reports said, where his brother Asylbek Jeenbekov called for unity and order.
