Qingdao Cancels More Than Half of Flights Amid Covid-19 Surge

China rushed to test an entire city of nine million people in days on Tuesday following a minor coronavirus outbreak, underscoring the country's capabilities at a time when European countries in particular are struggling to contain new infections.

Queues for testing stretched deep into Monday night across the eastern city, which detected six virus cases the day before but swiftly swung into action to head off a wider outbreak.

Despite the vaccine testing setbacks, which health experts say is normal as testing scales up massively in its later stages, the World Bank approved $12 billion for developing countries to finance the purchase and distribution of vaccines, tests and treatment.

Residents said on social media that community representatives informed them of their nearest testing stations, with local districts helping to organise sample collection for mass testing.

'As of 8 am. our city has taken 3.08 million samples for nucleic testing, ' the city's health commission said Tuesday, adding that no new positive samples were found.

Responding to the news from Qingdao, the nearby city of Jinan has reportedly called for anyone who visited the city since September 23 to get tested for Covid-19.

Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and men's golf world number one Dustin Johnson both tested positive for the virus as a surge in cases cast a shadow over the return of professional sport.

China has once before moved to test a whole city after recording just a handful of new cases.

Chinese health authority said on Wednesday that it received reports of 20 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland on Tuesday, including six that were domestically transmitted and 14 imported.

"Herd immunity is achieved by protecting people from a virus, not by exposing them to it, ' World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Monday, describing the idea as 'scientifically and ethically problematic". The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra had begun its new season of performances last Friday with a sold-out socially distanced concert due to coronavirus restrictions.

China has reported a total of 4,634 deaths among 85,611 confirmed cases of Covid-19.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will on Monday announce a new three-tiered alert system for coronavirus cases in England, while German authorities shuttered Berlin bars and clubs after 11pm until the end of the month and France is believed to be mulling local lockdowns in major cities.

Brazil has registered 10,220 additional cases of Covid-19 during the past 24 hours and 309 deaths, the nation's health ministry said.

The national death toll from coronavirus in Britain is more than 42,000 - the worst in Europe. "I don't think there'll be many businesses after this lockdown".

On October 11, authorities reported six new coronavirus cases and six asymptomatic cases. Since March, it has reported 129,747 cases, of which 59,901 have recovered.

By Tuesday, the number of infections linked to the cluster had climbed to 1,446, and more than 2,000 other people were asked to quarantine at home.
