Russia receives DCGI nod for trial of COVID vaccine in India

The Russian Direct Investment Fund, the primary investor in the development of Russia's first COVID-19 vaccine, agreed in September to conduct clinical trials of Sputnik V in India with Dr Reddy's, an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), BBIBP-CorV is one of 10 other vaccines that have entered phase three of trials.

According to The Lancet, there are now 42 vaccines for COVID-19 in clinical trials.

Dr. Reddy's and Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) had last month announced a partnership to conduct clinical trials of Sputnik V vaccine and its distribution in India.

According to Dr Jadhav, India will get 60-70 million dosages of vaccines by December 2020 but they will hit the market in 2021 after the clearance of licensing. The city-based drug maker said in a press release that this will be a multi-center and randomised controlled study, which will include safety and immunogenicity study.

Researchers did, however, state that the findings of these early-stage clinical trials will prove useful during phase-3 clinical trials of China's Covid-19 vaccine candidate.

Interim results are expected to be published in early November.

RDIF CEO Kirill Dmitriev said the entity was pleased to collaborate with the Indian regulators. Talks with Indian manufacturers are also ongoing.

Media reports say the two-dose vaccine is available for the public in Russian Federation but may not be available in other countries at least till the first half of 2021. Although 55 per cent of the population is below 50 years of age, yet, as per the availability of vaccines, healthcare workers should get the vaccines first, then people over 60 years of age with comorbidities followed by the rest of the populace. Will need 600m doses for priority groups: OfficialAccording to the draft plan, the experts' committee has estimated a 70-lakh healthcare workforce from the government as well as private sector.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has also previously declared that Chinese vaccines would be made a "global public good".

Since the start of the pandemic, Russian Federation has recorded more than 1,340,000 infections, fourth in the world behind the United States, India and Brazil.

The final stage of the clinical trial of Oxford's COVID-19 vaccine is underway in the country.

The prime minister noted the steady decline in the daily Covid cases and the growth rate. Modi said India should not limit its efforts to immediate neighbourhood, but also reach out to the entire world in providing vaccines, medicines and other platforms for vaccine delivery system.
