Women on 10 different flights subjected to invasive searches at Doha airport

The government had directed a "comprehensive, transparent investigation" into the incident, and said it would share the results with other countries.

"Surely we know enough to raise our deep concern and express at the most senior levels of government the importance of the report being finalised promptly".

On Monday, Australia's foreign ministry had said reports of the women's treatment indicated it was "beyond circumstances in which the women could give free and informed consent".

"While the aim of the urgently-decided search was to prevent the perpetrators of the terrible crime from escaping, the State of Qatar regrets any distress or infringement on the personal freedoms of any traveler caused by this action".

The women, including 13 Australians, were examined at Hamad International Airport on October 2 after Qatar Airways Flight QR908 to Sydney was delayed. "Australia is not the only country affected", she said.

Qatar's government apologised and said the baby was safe in medical care.

The invasive searches came to light this week after passengers contacted authorities in Australia.

But Foreign Minister Marise Payne told a parliamentary hearing on Wednesday morning that number is now 18 Australia women on 10 flights.

Payne did not detail the destinations of the other flights, adding she was unaware whether any Australian women were on those planes.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Qatar apologized Wednesday after authorities forcibly examined female passengers from a Qatar Airways flight to Australia to try to identify who might have given birth to a newborn baby found abandoned at the airport earlier this month.

"This is not - by any standard - normal behaviour and the Qataris recognise that, are appalled by it, do not want it to happen again, and are working with us and other partners to work through it".

"A newborn infant was found in a trash can, concealed in a plastic bag and buried under garbage, at Hamad International Airport (HIA)", the government said in a statement.

The Qatar Government said a "comprehensive, transparent investigation" into the incident was being conducted and the results would be shared with its global partners.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday that the search methods used were unacceptable.

"This was the first instance of an abandoned infant being discovered in such a condition at HIA - this egregious and life-threatening violation of the law triggered an immediate search for the parents, including on flights in the vicinity of where the newborn was found", the government said on its communications website.

"The State of Qatar remains committed to ensuring the safety, security and comfort of all travellers transiting through the country", it said in a statement.

"They are actually providing a pretty important role in getting Australians home so we need to continue to manage both of these issues".
