All three new computers are supposed to be available in stores next week, with prices starting at nearly $700 for the Mac Mini to $1,200 for the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple's MacBook Air starts at $1599, the MacBook Pro starts at $1999 and the Mac Mini starts at $1099.

Here in Australia the Mac Mini starts at $1,099 and will be available on November 17.

The transition to Apple-designed processors for the Mac-and away from Intel Mac chips-is about to become real.

It is a boon for Apple computers, which are overshadowed by the company's iPhone but still rack up tens of billions of dollars in sales per year.

The MacBook Air will start at $999, the same as its predecessor, and have up to twice the battery life, Apple said.

Multiple reports have suggested that new MacBooks featuring Apple's own processors.

The new Macs are debuting amid high demand for laptop computers as consumers, companies, schools and government agencies adjust to a work-at-home shift triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. It could mean AR glasses or other new ideas or products that the company is now developing.

Besides the new MacBook Air, Apple also announced a brand new Mac Mini featuring the same M1 processor.

The new M1 system-on-a-chip "leads to some impressive specs", Hans Mosesmann, a semiconductor analyst at Rosenblatt Securities, wrote in a note to investors. It's based on a 5-nanometer process.

Apple said in June that the final switch from Intel will take two years.

Disclosure: the author owns 12 shares in Apple. When announcing the transition, Apple said the move would provide a common architecture across all of its devices. That means future iPhones, Macs, iPads and Apple Watches will run a variation of the same chip.

"Given these challenges, the company has decided that the best strategy to help fix this issue is to make the Mac more like the iPhone and iPad by leveraging its mobile silicon into a computer platform and even allowing the Mac to run iOS apps". But the change highlights a crisis engulfing the world's largest chipmaker.

Apple today held its third product launch event, and the keynote saw the launch of Apple's first Mac chip. In particular, Apple's past laptops were known for having substantial RAM and processing power but lacking in graphical processing power.
