Google lets employees work from home for another year

The company told TechCrunch that Sundar Pichai announced the plan in an email sent to staff earlier today.

If you were looking for a sign that the COVID-19 pandemic was easing down, this is not it. Google will reportedly ask its employees to continue working from home until July 2021.

Google LLC will allow its employees around the world to work from home until July 2021, altering an earlier plan to resume office work from next January amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, United States media said Monday. That will remain in effect regardless of progress in combating the pandemic before then. The extended timeline will apply to employees not just in North America, but also other offices in India, Brazil, and the UK.

Google employees won't be returning to campus any time soon as Google has chose to keep everyone working from home for at least another year. Google reopened a handful of small offices in countries with limited coronavirus infections like Greece and Australia.

The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, said almost all of the 200,000 Google employees and contractors worldwide would see an extension of the option which had been set to end in January.

"I know it hasn't been easy", Pichai wrote in the internal memo.

"We are still learning a lot from our experiences of working from home and will use that knowledge to inform our approach to the future of work at Google".
