Judge nixes Trump bid to stop Philadelphia vote count

President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden are now in a heated battle for the White House.

As votes continued to be counted and Democrat Joe Biden edged closer to victory, Trump lashed out Thursday evening in a performance that suggested he knew his prospects for a second term were slipping away.

Mr Biden now has 253 electoral college votes, giving him a commanding lead in the race to accumulate the 270 needed to win the White House under the state-by-state USA election system. "Both changes were proper and neither invalidated the votes or the process".

Securing Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes would put Biden over the 270 he needs to win the presidency after a political career stretching back almost five decades.

Trump still had a lead in Georgia over Biden, but only by a margin of some 1,700 votes as of 1 a.m.

In Michigan, the campaign had sought to stop counting of absentee ballots, while in Georgia it had alleged that even improper ballots were being counted.

He trails in Arizona, a key battleground state.

These are all sentiments that Trump echoed on the night of the election when he took the podium at the White House and claimed that he would ultimately prove to be the President-Elect by night's end.

In an extraordinary press conference at the White House, Mr Trump claimed he would "easily win" if authorities were only counting "legal votes".

On Thursday afternoon, Mr Biden said: "Democracy is sometimes messy".

Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy on Thursday expressed concern over the state of the news media, and specifically Fox News, saying the election has exposed real problems with election projections.

Republicans went to court Thursday afternoon to complain that election officials in the Democratic-led city were ignoring a state court order they'd won earlier in the day to give them a closer view of ballot processing. We've seen throughout this entire election cycle, anxiety and tensions are very high right now, and we have tried in MI, really in a bipartisan way, with clerks on both sides of the aisle and election workers also on both sides of the aisle, to make sure that we focus on simply ensuring every vote can be counted, every vote is validated, no invalid votes are counted - all of those things.

"Stop. Full stop. The votes will be counted and you will either win or lose. If you count the illegal votes, they can try to steal the election from us", said the president as his reelection hopes hung by a thread. To prevail, Trump would have to win all four remaining battleground states; Biden would have to win one.

"Tonight every American should be angry, outraged and anxious and concerned about what happened in the election and the lead-up to the election", host Sean Hannity complained, stopping short of echoing Trump's baseless allegations of fraud.

"The process is working", he said in Wilmington. It is quite common in presidential elections to have vote counting continue after election day. Harris and I will be declared the winners. "I want the next president to be the person who legitimately wins the Electoral College and I will accept whoever that is".

Biden earlier said he will not be hasty in declaring victory, noting vote counting must continue until each and every vote is counted.
