Saints To Start Taysom Hill Instead Of Jameis Winston

The Saints confirmed Friday they were placing Brees on injured reserve, which requires a minimum of three weeks before being activated. Winston - who was selected No. 1 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015 - has started 70 games over his six-year career.

Schefter added that Winston "will not be part of any offensive packages" for the Saints, meaning New Orleans is fully ready to see what it has in Hill.

Brees suffered rib fractures on each side of his chest and a collapsed right lung last weekend, seemingly when he took a crushing hit from San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Kentavius Street in the second quarter of New Orleans' 27-13 win.

No timetable has been set for Brees' return.

The Saints gave Hill a lucrative extension in the summer with hopes that he could eventually become the franchise quarterback.

Hill, who signed a two-year, $21 million deal in April, is a jack-of-all-trades for the Saints.

Hill has attempted just five passes this season, but has completed four of them for 86 yards.

In nine games, Brees has thrown for 2,196 yards, with 18 touchdowns against 3 interceptions.

He has lost two fumbles this season and three in his career. Payton didn't deny that report, but told reporters he hadn't announced a starter yet.

The Saints did not make either quarterback available for media interviews this week.

Here's the definitive proof that the Saints are not bluffing about Taysom Hill's bright future at quarterback. Payton and teammates have credited Winston for his attitude, leadership and development throughout the season. He also took snaps in Brees' absence last week.
