With 44K new cases, India's Covid tally nears 88 lakh-mark

India's COVID-19 tally reached 8,773,479 on Saturday as 44,684 new cases were registered across the country in the past 24 hours, said latest data released by the federal health ministry.

The 191 new cases Friday represented the sixth consecutive day above 100 and was the highest daily increase since September 4, when authorities reported 198 new infections.

National capital Delhi reported 104 deaths due to coronavirus infection on Friday, the highest fatalities due to the highly contagious virus in one day. Currently, the death rate of corona in the country is 1.47 percent while the recovery rate is 93 percent.

India has reported less than 50,000 new daily cases for the eight continuous day. Total cured cases are 80,66,502 with 52,718 new discharges in the last 24 hours. A total of 41,100 persons were found to be infected with Covid-19 in India in a span of 24 hours, while 42,156 people recuperated during the same period, leading to a further contraction of the active caseload.

Maharashtra continued to be the worsthit state with 1,736,329 cases till date. He said the number of corona affectees and death toll are increasing day by day. Delhi and West Bengal follow with 96 and 53 new deaths, respectively, the union health ministry said. Recently, no state other than Maharashtra has been reporting COVID-19 deaths in such high numbers. The recoveries stand at 3,46,81,795.

India's coronavirus tally on Friday crossed the grim mark of 87.28 lakh after the country reported a single-day spike of 44,878 fresh cases, which is 6 per cent lower than Thursday.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) in its report earlier this month suggested that "adults of any age with certain underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19". Active cases are on the rise in Manipur, he added.
