'Gilligan's Island' star Dawn Wells dies of COVID-19 complications

She did end up acknowledging her need and accepted more than $180,000 in donations.

Her publicist announced that Wells passed away Wednesday morning in Los Angeles from causes related to COVID-19, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Wells, playing a cheerful brunette Midwestern farm girl, appeared in the series wearing short shorts, midriff tops and pigtails.

Gilligan's Island was canceled by network executives despite respectable ratings, then became ubiquitous in syndicated reruns. "Condolences to the family of Dawn Wells".

Tina Louise, who played Ginger, is now the lone surviving member of the "Gilligan's Island" cast.

Wells added in the post that she was grateful to her supportive fans and that her outlook remained positive. "But the first thing you want to do is break that character and go do something else", Wells said.

"Gilligan's Island", which aired from 1964 to 1967, claimed an enduring place - as inexplicable as it was irrefutable - in pop culture.

Mary Ann was the stereotypical innocent, fresh-faced Kansas farm girl, created to contrast with Ginger (Tina Louise, now the sole surviving cast member), the Marilyn Monroe-like movie star. At least I didn't.

Wells is survived by her stepsister, Weslee Wells. A lot of guys would come up to me and say I married a Mary Ann. "It's been a hard time breaking the image acting-wise". Call it the Tom Hanks rule.

After "Gilligan's" Dawn appeared in various TV shows, including "The Wild Wild West" and "Bonanza". It was a surreal experience, a 2004 boat party to promote the Season 1 DVD (the only season in black-and-white) at the harbor in Marina del Rey, where one of the season-opening credits sequences was filmed. "Everybody gets it. And I always win". Did characters from fantastical '60s sitcoms all hang out together?

Wells suffered a financial setback in 2018 and fans raised more than $205,000 to assist her.

She told The New York Times that certain doors were closed to her, one of them being a staging of the Eve Ensler play "The Vagina Monologues". Either worked for me. And part of the title song in the line "the professor and/MaryAnn/here on Gilligan's Island".

Dawn Wells (pictured in 2019) has died from COVID-19. She also performed on Broadway in a variety of roles.

To mark the 50th anniversary of "Gilligan's Island".

In it, she noted, "It's not my ego talking, but Mary Ann wasn't just a silly and sweet ingenue". It's in our memories.
