Here's how MS congressmen voted on $2000 stimulus checks

The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Monday to override President Donald Trump's veto of a $740 billion defense policy bill, in a rebuke to the president that underscored deep divisions in the Republican Party during his final weeks in office.

With a 322-87 vote, the House easily passed the threshold of a two-thirds majority to override the president's veto of the 741-billion-U.S. -dollar National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of Fiscal Year 2021.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., applauded the vote Monday, saying, "The House and the President are in agreement: we must deliver $2,000 checks to American families struggling this Holiday Season".

Trump finally signed the $900 billion coronavirus relief deal and a $1.4 trillion omnibus bill while vacationing at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after suddenly balking at the $600 stimulus checks and foreign aid included in the package.

The White House announced the signature Sunday night. The reality is that congressional leaders passed the relief bill in combination with a broader spending bill that funds the government.

President Trump, seen here at the White House on December 12, has signed the coronavirus relief package.

Trump objected the bill, which will fund the US military portfolio through September 2021, because it didn't include a provision to repeal or "make any meaningful changes" to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a law that provides a legal shield to social media giants like Twitter and Facebook, which the president claimed used that section of the law to suppress conservative voices.

Aside from the direct $600 checks to most Americans, the COVID-19 portion of the bill revives a weekly pandemic jobless benefit boost - this time $300, through March 14 - as well as a popular Paycheck Protection Program of grants to businesses to keep workers on payrolls.

People who file their tax returns individually and have adjusted gross income of up to $75,000 will get $600, with the amount gradually reduced for individuals who earn more.

Meantime the government funding portion of the bill keeps federal agencies nationwide running without dramatic changes until September 30.

President-elect Joe Biden told reporters at an event in Wilmington, Delaware, that he supported the $2,000 checks. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has declined to say publicly how the Senate will handle the bill when Democrats there try to push it forward for a vote on Tuesday.

Trump has criticized the defense bill on several fronts, arguing without explanation that the bill benefits China.

But in an attempt to save face, Trump released a statement airing his grievances about the November 3 election and claiming that he had obtained a number of concessions on the relief bill.

For now, the administration can only begin work sending out the $600 payments. But it was members of Trump's own party who had rejected proposals for higher payments during negotiations. Another 20 House Republicans - including Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California, a Trump confidant - skipped the vote, despite pandemic procedures that allow lawmakers to vote by proxy to avoid travel to the Capitol.

Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, threatened Monday to block action on another pressing issue, overriding Trump's veto of key defense legislation, until the Senate votes on the higher relief payments. More than $2 trillion is at stake, including badly needed pandemic aid for programs like unemployment and food assistance. But I think we as members of the legislative body have to look at the reasons behind that.

"Hurting Americans shouldn't have to wait any longer", she said.
