CDC to recommend states give Covid vaccine to anyone 65 and older

Alarmed by a sluggish coronavirus vaccine rollout, USA health agencies announced a string of changes to expand supply, loosen eligibility guidelines and open more locations for people to get shots in arms as the pandemic continues to rage.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced the policy shift on Tuesday.

Public health officials say the pace is picking up somewhat - nearly 9 million people have received their first dose according to CDC data - but experts say the pace needs to increase and that state and local jurisdictions need more resources and support to resolve the bottleneck.

Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the CDC, told Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear earlier this week that while the agency wants states to follow the CDC's recommendations, they are not required to.

"Results from the phase three clinical trial of Coronavax vaccine in Bandung demonstrate a 65.3 percent efficacy, in comparison to a 91.5 percent efficacy during a similar trial in Turkey and 78 percent in Brazil", Penny said.

The government on Wednesday said it was still on track to receive and administer a coronavirus vaccine by China's Sinovac Biotech starting next month, despite data from a Brazil trial that showed 50.4% efficiency, health officials said. "Every vaccine dose sitting in a warehouse rather than going into an arm could mean one more death that could have been avoided". Operation Warp Speed has been holding back half of the doses in an effort to make sure recipients could receive their second dose. Also, states are being urged to vaccinate cohorts who come lower down in the initial priority list recommended by the CDC.

"We are asking for information directly from Sinovac, so we are waiting for their response to get all the facts", he said.
