Chinese state media blast Trump administration move on Taiwan

Chinese state media blast Trump administration move on Taiwan

A writer for the official Xinhua News Agency also said in a commentary on Sunday that the lifting of longstanding restrictions on United States government contacts with Taiwanese counterparts proves that Pompeo "is only interested in stoking unwarranted confrontations, and has no interest in world peace".

For years, most high-ranking US military officials and senior American officials were banned from traveling to Taiwan to avoid upsetting Beijing.

In recent years, the Trump administration has increased support in Taiwan and both countries have engaged in military transactions.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Washington, which serves as Taiwan's unofficial embassy, said the move showed the "strength and depth" of the US-Taiwan ties.

"The United States will pay a heavy price for its wrong action", the Chinese mission to the UN said in a statement responding to Craft's planned trip.

He said: "Decades of discrimination, removed".

China has condemned the United States for scrapping curbs on interactions with Taiwan officials, saying nobody could prevent the country's "re-unification", while Taiwan's foreign minister hailed the USA move as a sign of "global partnership".

"The Chinese people's resolve to defend our sovereignty and territorial integrity is unshakable and we will not permit any person or force to stop the process of China's re-unification", foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters.

"Taiwan is an important unofficial partner, a major economic and security partner, making robust engagement a vital USA national interest". The so-called "one-China" policy is widely recognized by the global community, and a sensitive topic for Chinese officials who condemn USA involvement. He stated the USA had "created complex internal restrictions" in a bid to "appease" the Chinese Government. "It is a good thing badly done, four years too late, that can be reversed with little effort in a few weeks".

It comes as the Trump administration enters its final days ahead of the inauguration of Joe Biden as president on 20 January. "It is against our traditions to make policy decisions in the waning days of an administration".

Craft's scheduled three-day visit will come just a week before Joe Biden's inauguration as United States president, adding to a string of diplomatic headaches facing the incoming administration.

"These changes are long overdue, and the Trump administration ideally would have made them sooner".

Mr Pompeo noted the State Department had created complex restrictions over contacts between the U.S. and Taiwan which were taken to appease the Communist regime in Beijing.

In response to arms deals with Taiwan, Beijing said it would impose sanctions on Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon.

"The incoming Biden administration should also examine self-imposed limitations related to USA military training and exercises with Taiwan", Bowman said.
