Coronavirus Canada Updates: Ontario hits record high 3328 new COVID-19 cases

Meanwhile, a hospital in London, Ont., declared itself free of COVID-19 outbreaks after 23 deaths and more than 150 infections.

Ontario is reporting 5,839 new cases of COVID-19 over the last two days.

The CEO of the Ontario Long-Term Care Association, which represents almost 70 per cent of homes in the province, says the rising number of outbreaks is pushing the system to its limits.

In the 207 care homes that are reporting an outbreak, there are 1,140 confirmed active resident cases and 1,130 confirmed active health care worker cases.

By comparison, she said, at the peak of the first wave on May 18, 2,538 residents and 1,615 staff were infected across 190 facilities. "There are so many homes with outbreaks that are growing extremely quickly, the death counts are mounting, and the hospitals are overstretched now".

Of the newly announced cases, 713 are in Peel, 700 are in Toronto, 395 are in York Region, 226 are in Windsor-Essex County, and 171 are in Hamilton.

The record for daily new cases remains 3,363 set Saturday.

There are 998 hospitalizations in the province, including 329 intensive care cases, and 228 patients on ventilators.

That pushes the seven-day average of daily new cases to 2,655, which is also a record.

Over 116 residents have tested positive, while 113 staff members have received a positive test result.
