Lions reportedly agree to trade QB Matthew Stafford

Matthew Stafford is available for trade.

The longtime Lions starting quarterback has informed the team that he would like to make a fresh start, according to ESPN. Still, knowing signal-callers are now playing into their 40s, I believe there is going to be a competitive market for a player of Stafford's caliber and relative youth. Mayhew is now the general manager in Washington, one of many National Football League teams in need of a quarterback this offseason.

If only life were so simple.

While Stafford has not spoken publicly since news broke about his pending departure, his wife, Kelly, posted on Instagram on Monday, thanking Detroit's fans and the city itself for embracing her and her family and what it has meant to them over the past 12 years.

Despite a remarkable comeback in 2020, Alex Smith's future is up in the air and neither Kyle Allen or Taylor Heinicke seem capable of being the answer under centre.

He's spent much of his career as a running backs coach, occupying that role with numerous teams from 2003-16.

Washington's own the 19th-overall pick in the draft and can create more flexibility with their salary cap in order to acquire Stafford.

As a player, Lynn was part of the Broncos teams that won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII.

"Random tears come very often when I think about not being here", Kelly Stafford wrote. His Chargers team this past season was sixth in the league in passing yards per game (270.6) with a rookie quarterback, Justin Herbert, behind center the majority of the season and had the No. 6 passing offense in 2019 (276.6 yards per game). He's also dealt with a number of injuries and head coaching changes.

While Kyle Shanahan has thrown support behind Jimmy Garoppolo as the 49ers starter in 2021, that was before Stafford emerged as a trade possibility. He has two years and $43 million remaining on his deal.
