Local school boards prepare for remote learning

The region's medical officer of health ordered the closure of local schools starting December 14 - a week before the break was to begin - due to rising numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the area and to help stem the spread.

A form for those who want to change to a new model will be posted on the school board's website starting Wednesday at 4 p.m. and will stay up until January 6 at 4 p.m.

Following the holiday break, school will resume online on January 4.

Plans for in-person learning is still up in the air for students in Roseburg Public Schools, despite Gov. Kate Brown's plan to give districts more freedom to reopen.

District staff said they will also continue with their limited in-person learning option, which allows some struggling students back into the classroom.

Mills said it's obviously hard to determine when in-person at-school learning will be allowed.

Those students already enrolled in remote learning through the ALCDSB Virtual School are not impacted by these changes and will continue their regular programming.

Elementary students (Kindergarten to Grade 8) will move to remote learning for the first week of school (Jan. 4 to 8, 2021) with face-to-face learning resuming on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021.

Other secondary and college students will go back full-time on January 18, he told Parliament.

"The new learning model will remain in place for that student for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year".

The Ministry is also engaged in forming a COVID-19 Education Task Force and that team will take the lead in planning for schools to reopen safely.
