Massive power outage in Pakistan

It plunged large swathes across Pakistan into darkness.

Electricity is gradually being restored in some areas of Pakistan following a huge power cut across the country, with every city reporting outages.

"A countrywide blackout has been caused by a sudden plunge in the frequency in the power transmission system", Power Minister Omar Ayub Khan said on Twitter.

"People are urged to remain patient", it wrote.

He said citizens would be kept updated on the restoration efforts periodically.

Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat tweeted that the National Transmission Despatch Company's (NTDC) lines have tripped, causing outage."It will take sometime before everything gets back to normal", he added. In 2015, around 80% of the country was left without power after a key transmission line broke down.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy said the frequency drop resulted from a "fault" at Guddu at 11:41 p.m. "Power plants have been shut down due to falling frequencies", the ministry said.

"Systematic restoration of power will be initiated soon", they explained. "We are told that the technical fault will be restored shortly, Insha'Allah", he said.

Meanwhile, Special assistant to the prime minister Shahbaz Gill said that the energy minister, Ayub, and his entire team were working on the issue.

This is a developing story that is being updated as the situation evolves. Initial reports in the media can sometimes be inaccurate.
