Tesla has quietly introduced a new entry-level version of its Model Y that Elon Musk said last summer it wouldn't build.
Tesla quietly presented a new version of its Model Y sports auto Thursday evening that is part of the company's efforts to produce affordable cars.
For the longest time the Model Y has been sold in two flavors, a Long Range version and Performance version, but flashback to the unveil day of the Model Y and you will remember that a more affordable Standard Range version was also announced. Through the power of Tesla software updates, the Standard Range might see a boost that gets it over 250 miles, but even still, a range of 244 miles is more than enough for most people's daily commutes.
The cheaper price comes with a lower estimated EPA range of 244 miles compared to the 326 miles in the long-range version.
Tesla Inc has released a cheaper variant of the Model Y, bringing the price of its sport utility vehicle closer to that of its Model 3 sedan, the electric auto maker's cheapest auto.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla had said that the company's target was to release this cheaper variant in spring 2021.
Consumers will have to spend an additional $8,000 for the next step up in the lineup, a dual-motor Long Range variant with a price of $51,190.
However, the company has clearly had a change of heart since then as we can now find the Standard Range option for the Model Y. The company mentions that this variant will be delivered in 2 to 5 weeks.
Tesla now notes that the estimated delivery times for the vehicle will range from anywhere between two to five weeks.
The electric auto maker has also listed a two to five week time for deliveries of the 7-seat option in the US. In addition to finally being able to order the most affordable Model Y, Tesla has also given us the much anticipated seven-person seating option. This is due to the sliding second-row seats with adjustable seatbacks, allowing owners to give third-row Model Y passengers more space.
