Trump extends immigration bans despite opposition from U.S. business groups

Judge Daniel P. Collins, a Trump appointee, wrote that the president acted within his authority, relying largely on the Supreme Court's ruling that upheld Trump's travel ban on several predominantly Muslim countries.

"I am with President Trump on this", Graham said on Fox News.

GOP Senator Ben Sasse has urged his Republican colleagues to reject the "dangerous ploy" to disenfranchise millions of Americans' votes. We have to be remembered for whats been done, Trump said in the almost five-minute message.

After listing his administration's achievements for four minutes, Trump says "it's so easy if you know what you're doing".

The president cut short his Christmas break, missing out on the annual New Year's Eve party at his Florida residence despite charging attendees $1,000 per ticket.

Trump's early return comes as tensions escalate between the United States and Iran in the final weeks of his administration. The Associated Press reports there is concern Iran could order military retaliation for the US killing a top Iranian military commander on January 3, 2020 in a drone strike. Irans initial response, five days after that deadly USA drone strike, was a ballistic missile attack on a military base in Iraq that caused brain concussion injuries to about 100 US troops.

Although staff changes are normal with presidential transitions, this specific shift indicates how the harsh political differences between Trump and Biden will shift every aspect - even those typically nonpolitical - of the White House.

Trump expanded his tweeted insults beyond his usual targets, the "fake news" media and the Democrats. He added, "We hear chatter of additional attacks against Americans in Iraq".

Trump, accompanied by his wife, Melania, arrived at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida after dark on December 23 and spent practically the entire vacation focused on trying to subvert the voters' will from last month's election.

The outgoing president appeared more focused on gathering GOP support for his extraordinary challenge of President-elect Joe Biden's win when the Electoral College vote is tallied in a joint session of Congress on January 6.

Other Republican senators are expected to join Hawley, wary of ceding the spotlight to him as they, too, try to emerge as leaders in a post-Trump era.

Biden criticised Donald Trump's vaccination rollout.

Trump, who had COVID-19 in October, frequently played down the severity of the pandemic and oversaw a response many health experts have criticized as disorganized, cavalier and sometimes ignored the science behind virus transmission.

By contrast, the administration's edict to immediately expel asylum-seekers and others who cross the border illegally from Mexico was justified on grounds of containing the coronavirus, though reporting by The Associated Press and others found that government scientists saw no evidence for it.

In April, Trump signed an immigration proclamation targeting people outside of the USA seeking to legally migrate to the United States, with some exceptions.

Liberal senators, led by Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who support the relief boost are blocking action on the defense bill until a vote is taken on Trump's demand.

"At the very least, Congress should investigate allegations of voter fraud and adopt measures to secure the integrity of our elections", Hawley said in a statement.
