Woman accused of attacking teen in NY hotel arrested after fleeing police

Miya Ponsetto was arrested Thursday during a traffic stop in which she had to be forcibly removed from her vehicle in Piru, located in Ventura County, almost 3,000 miles from the lobby of the boutique Manhattan hotel where the physical confrontation occurred, authorities said.

Miya made headlines in December when she attacked a 14-year old black child at the Arlo Hotel in New York City after falsely accusing him of stealing her cell phone. The ethnicity of the woman in the video is not clear, although NY police described her as White.

The New York Police Department flew detectives out to California earlier Thursday with a warrant for Ponsetto's arrest.

That followed days of intense media coverage of the fracas at the hotel and demands by the teen's family that she face criminal charges.

Miya Ponsetto has been arrested for her attack on Keyon Harrold Jr. A hotel manager tries to intervene.

Trumpeter Keyon Harrold posted a video taken with his phone that shows the woman making claims against his son.

"We were basically targeted, and the lady from the video is screaming ... erratically that my son somehow took her phone", Harrold previously told ABC News. The father posted the video, which showed Ponsetto screaming in the lobby and lunging at his child.

Ponsetto tells King she "considers [herself] to be super-sweet" and "really never meant for it to hurt him or his father". Police released surveillance video that shows who they say is Ponsetto tackling the teen and scratching his father.

Ghatan says she was unaware of Ponsetto's arrest, but says, "Miya has not grasped the severity of her circumstances".

"She's not trying to make any racial statement", Ghatan said.

There is a privilege to being able to go on to national television wearing a hat that says "Daddy" and telling Gayle King "enough" when she's pointing out that you assaulted Keyon Harrold Jr., a Black teenager, on camera because you "thought" he stole your phone with absolutely no proof. She was jailed in Ventura County, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office there said.

Great, you're signed up!

Ponsetto circumvented straight addressing points of racism and profiling, by stating that she was "doing her half" in serving to the resort workers observe down her telephone, though she admits she was not stopping everybody leaving the foyer.

When King suggested that Ponsetto's actions did not come off as sweet, Ponsetto replied, "How would you feel if you were alone in NY and you were going to spend time with your family during the holidays and you lose the one thing, that gets stolen from you, that has all of the access to the only way you're going to get back home?"

"She tried to slam the door on one of the deputies and that's when they just reached in and forcibly removed her", he said, adding that the sheriff's office would ask county prosecutors to charge her with resisting arrest. Now held without bail, she is scheduled to face a judge on January 8, 2020 and is expected to be extradited to NY afterwards.
