Ontario reports fewer than 1,000 new COVID cases, 42 deaths

The Province also confirmed 1,414 recoveries today and 45 new cases of the COVID-19 variant that originated in the UK.

The province reported 1,076 new infections on Friday, 945 on Thursday and 1,072 on Wednesday.

Case counts have been low in recent days due to under-reporting from Toronto.

The news comes as several provinces are reporting a drop or stabilization in the number of new COVID-19 cases.

To date, 3,797 long-term care home residents have died due to COVID-19 infection. Health Minister Christine Elliott says there are 361 new cases in Toronto, 210 in Peel Region, and 122 in York Region.

Last week, Ontario health officials said that more than five percent of positive COVID-19 cases accrued in late January tested positive for multiple variants, including the United Kingdom and South African strains.

705 people are now hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 786 reported yesterday.

Of the cases reported today there are 135 people under 19 years old, 390 people between 20 and 39 years old, 238 people between 40 and 59 years old, 130 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 51 people over the age of 80. No new cases of the South African variant were reported in the province.

Elsewhere in the GTA, both Halton Region and Durham Region logged 35 new cases of the novel coronavirus today.

To date, Ontario has identified 303 lab-confirmed cases of the United Kingdom variant, six of the South African variant and one of the P.1 variant, which first emerged in Brazil.

Another 43,383 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed.

Ontario labs conducted 48,701 tests, down from more than 58,700 tests on Saturday.

Elliott says today's number is once again 'under-reported'.

The province reported 68,812 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 2.3 per cent positivity rate. Of those, 287 are in intensive care, 203 on ventilators.

A total of 442,441 doses of vaccine have been administered in the province.

On Saturday, more than 10,670 doses of the vaccine were administered.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit confirmed 10 new cases, while Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington confirmed seven new cases.

Meanwhile, 786 people in Ontario are hospitalized with COVID-19, an increase of 23 over the previous day.

"When all reasonable steps have been taken to complete first-dose vaccinations of all staff, essential caregivers and residents of long-term care homes, high-risk retirement homes and First Nations elder care homes, first-dose vaccinations may be made available to the remainder of the Phase One populations", the province said in its memo.
