Bill and Melinda Gates announced Monday that they are divorcing.

American business magnate Bill Gates and his wife Melinda are divorcing after nearly three decades of marriage.

The couple, who have frequently been among the richest couples on earth for decades now, is estimated to be worth well over $100 billion dollars.

They married in 1994 on the Hawaiian island of Lanai.

The couple met in 1987, when Mrs Gates - then known as Melinda French - was a product manager at Microsoft.

Gates, who founded Microsoft with Paul Allen in 1975, announced that he was leaving his company in March of 2020.

Bill Gates is considered one of the richest people in the world, now occupying the fourth position in the Forbes' list, with an estimated net worth of $124 billion.

He stepped down as Microsoft chief executive in 2008 to devote more time to philanthropy and later left the board, keeping only the title of "founder and technology advisor".

It's the second bombshell split among the uppermost ranks of the world's richest people in recent years, following the 2019 separation announcement of Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott.

"Bill Gates owns 1.37% of Microsoft's outstanding shares, which are worth more than $26 billion, according to FactSet".
