Iceland's Christmas advert banned for being too political

It outlines the effects of palm oil production on orangutan habitats, with Iceland declaring it has removed all palm oil from its products.

Supermarket Iceland's Christmas ad campaign has been banned from TV because it has fallen foul of political advertising rules.

Rang-tan is an emotive animation telling the story of rainforest destruction caused by palm oil production, and its devastating impact on the critically endangered orangutan.

In the Iceland ad a little girl discovers an Orangutan in her bedroom.

Palm oil is one of Malaysia's biggest exports worth around £17bn a year but the growing backlash over the destruction of Asia's biodiversity has sparked an angry response from farmers; who already see their livelihoods under threat from an European Union ban on palm oil in biofuels in 2020.

It also promotes the fact that Iceland have removed the product from their entire own brand range.

While the advert appears to be light hearted at the start with brightly coloured cartoons, things soon take a dark turn when it is the turn of the Orangutan to tell his story.

Now, if they really wanted to pull a John Lewis (that's the United Kingdom retailer, not the American congressman and civil rights icon), we'll be seeing Iceland-branded plush Rang-Tan toys under the tree.

"This was a film that Greenpeace made with a voice over by Emma Thompson", said Iceland's founder, Malcolm Walker.

The advert shows a bulldozer chasing Rang-Tan and her mother through the forest.

Iceland are the only major United Kingdom supermarket offering palm free mince pies this Christmas.

The company tweeted: "You won't see our Christmas advert on TV this year, because it was banned. We are proud to be encouraging consumers to make more sustainable choices, even without the support of TV advertising, ahead of the Christmas shopping season".

It may not comply with television rules but has been viewed and shared on social media thousands of times over.

He added: "Our commitment to help protect the home of orangutans remains extremely close to our hearts".
