The Green Party may cost Democrats a Senate seat in Arizona

Last night I gave up on the Arizona Senate race between Republican Martha McSally and Democrat Kyrsten Sinema at about 3 am Eastern time, midnight here in California.

The so-called "late earlies" may not be counted until Thursday in the county, where about 60 percent of Arizona's voters live.

The data reflect in-person votes cast on Election Day.

All mailed ballots and the ballots that could have been mailed but were dropped off by the voters require a series of labor-intensive verifications.

Kyrsten Sinema and Martha McSally.

The race for the Senate in Arizona is among the country's very tightest.

But by 11 p.m. on election night, attendees at the Arizona Democratic Party's event at the Renaissance Hotel in Phoenix began to dwindle. RealClearPolitics' polling average shows McSally leading by just 1 point, but nearly every poll has had the two candidates within the margin of error.

Sinema tweeted that the "race is about you and we're going to make sure your vote is counted".

How many outstanding ballots are there?

That leaves the contentious Senate race a cliffhanger in what's otherwise shaping up to be another banner Arizona year for Republicans.

Democrats hope Sinema can reverse a decade-long losing streak in all Arizona statewide races.

Republican Gov. Doug Ducey was easily re-elected over a challenge from Democrat David Garcia, a college education professor. The GOP notched victories in Attorney General, Treasurer and Secretary of State races as well. The Senate contest was the marquee race in an election where Republicans appeared poised to sweep most if not all other statewide seats.

The two are battling over the seat vacated by Sen. Jeff Flake, a Republican who decided not to run for re-election because he realized his criticism of President Donald Trump made it impossible for him to keep the seat.

McSally has painted Sinema as a radical leftist based on her activism in Green Party circles during the early 2000s, deploying old clips and images to tarnish Sinema, such as a photo of Sinema wearing a pink tutu at an anti-war protest. McSally, 52, is a onetime Trump critic who has embraced the president since his election.

She's a former Green Party activist who transformed herself into a more centrist Democrat.

Many Democrats have been critical of Trump's decision to send troops to the border, but a poll from Rasmussen shows that 50 percent of Americans support the decision.

"Because of the failures of Obamacare, we have so many people, right now, who are uncovered and don't have health insurance and health care - and many of them with pre-existing conditions", said McSally, who also pointed to high premiums and deductibles and limited choices in several Arizona counties.
