The midterms show Trump might not get re-elected in 2020

Republicans have picked up at least one seat in the Senate, with races in Arizona and MS remaining undecided.

Winning the majority in the House Tuesday night gave Democrats the power to set the agenda in the lower chamber. Republican Rep. Martha McSalley held a slim lead over Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, a Democrat.

Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams, trailing in Georgia's governor's race, has vowed to send it into overtime, trying to orchestrate a runoff by pushing Republican Brian Kemp's share of the vote under the 50 percent threshold.

"The control of the House, in turn, will allow the Democrats to open new investigations on the president".

The inquiry could potentially tie to a broader investigation into any connection between Mr Trump's presidential campaign and Russian involvement in the 2016 election - a charge the President has repeatedly and vehemently denied.

In Arizona, anti-Trump Jeff Flake also didn't seek reelection and will be replaced either by pro-Trump Martha McSally or Democrat Kyrsten Sinema.

That means any impeachment effort is likely to fail in the Senate, and also ensures Trump's appointments of judges will continue to go through.

Pelosi, meanwhile, is likely to face a challenge for the speakership from newer or younger members later this month. Although he started with some nods to bipartisanship, congratulating Nancy Pelosi on her victory, he quickly threatened Democrats.

Trump cited health care and infrastructure as areas where the two parties could work together.

The vote was seen as a referendum on the president, even though he is not up for re-election till 2020.

The road to a House majority ran through two dozen suburban districts Hillary Clinton won in 2016.

The Democrats made only slight inroads in Trump country, where they tried to win back white working-class voters. But it reveals once again that Trump really feels no allegiance to the Republican Party, its voters, or its candidates. Notable exceptions included four women of color who will soon become members of the House: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York), Ilhan Omar (Minnesota), Ayanna Pressley (Massachusetts) and Rashida Tlaib (Michigan).

Only two other Muslims have been elected to Congress, and both are men now in office: Ellison and Indiana Democratic Rep. Andre Carson.

Republicans warn that more investigations could blow back against the Democrats for the 2020 U.S. election. "I want to probe senior Administration officials across the government who have abused their positions of power and wasted taxpayer money, as well as President Trump's decisions to act in his own financial self-interest rather than the best interests of the American people".

"In a stark contrast to the GOP Congress, the Democratic Congress will be led with transparency and openness so that the public can see what is happening and how it affects them", she said in a victory speech to Democrats on Tuesday night. Here are some of the silver linings that Trump can take from Tuesday's vote.

"I am so honoured to share both the ballot and the stage with the many visionary, bold women who have raised their hand to run for public office", said Ayanna Pressley, who became the first black woman elected to Congress from MA.

And outside Richmond, Virginia, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat lost to Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act. A former legislative director for three Democrats in Congress, Justin Talbot-Zorn, responded with an article on The Nation's website pointing out that "bold progressivism and "pay-go" fiscal conservatism are mutually exclusive".

Pennsylvania was particularly daunting for Republicans after court-imposed redistricting and a rash of retirements put several seats in play.

One of the first items of business in January after the new Congress gets sworn in will be the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement. At least three other red districts flipped to blue.

The GOP leader sounded something of a quiet alarm on funding for the border and that 10 percent middle-class tax cut touted by Trump in the waning days of the 2018 midterms.

President George W. Bush saw Republicans net two Senate seats in 2002, while President Richard Nixon and Republicans gained one seat in 1970, according to 538.com.

Democrats will hold at least 21 seats in the 35-seat Senate and appeared poised to take at least 81 seats in the 151-seat House, with some results still pending in a handful of races, and others were still too close to call. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) has won another term.

With Democrats seizing control of the U.S. House in the midterm elections, several members of the MA delegation, including Neal, stand to emerge as powerful players on Capitol Hill in the 2019-2020 Congress. Rep. Jim McGovern, of Worcester, is likely to chair the influential Rules Committee.
