Trump says Cohen pleaded guilty 'to embarrass the President'

Donald Trump has denied directing his ex-lawyer Michael Cohen to break the law.

In a serious of tweets one day after Michael Cohen was sentenced to federal prison, Trump denied violating campaign finance laws and blamed his former longtime personal attorney for giving him bad legal advice.

District Judge William H Pauley III on Wednesday rejected arguments by Cohen's lawyers that he should be spared jail because he co-operated in multiple federal investigations involving Trump.

As part of the deal, publisher American Media Inc (AMI) admitted that it made the $150,000 payment to McDougal "in concert" with Trump's presidential campaign and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.

One additional aspect of Cohen's sentencing is that it allows Congress to move forward in inviting Cohen to oversight hearings (or subpoenaing him) in order to find out more about Trump's ties to Russian Federation.

Trump had called for a tough sentence for Cohen, whom he labelled a liar.

He tweeted: "I never directed Michael Cohen to break the law".

'Mr. Trump and the White House knew that Michael Cohen would be testifying falsely to Congress and did not tell him not to, ' Davis said.

"They gave General Flynn a great deal because they were embarrassed by the way he was treated", Trump wrote, referring to prosecutors on the team of special counsel Robert Muller, who is probing Russian election interference.

Federal law requires that the contribution of "anything of value" to a campaign must be disclosed, and an individual donation can not exceed $2,700. After Cohen pleaded guilty to the Mueller charges on November 29, Trump called his former lawyer a liar, "a weak person and not a very smart person".

Cohen, who pleaded guilty to all the charges against him, told the court that he had felt it was his "duty to cover up".

[T] hree years in prison is nothing when you consider Cohen's record.

Whether Mr. Trump ever faces prosecution, the sheer fact that the President is accused of orchestrating a breach of campaign-finance rules is a significant moment in USA history, political scientist Chris Edelson said.

Beyond the guilty pleas, it is unclear exactly what Cohen has told prosecutors, and it remains to be seen how much damage Cohen's co-operation will do to Trump. Federal prosecutors said Trump ordered the payouts to protect his campaign from allegations of sexual affairs with an adult film actress and a Playboy model. Former senator John Edwards was acquitted of illegally using campaign funds after arguing that payments to cover up his extramarital affair during a presidential bid were not related to the election.

Michael Avenatti, Daniels' lawyer, attended the sentencing and told reporters outside the courthouse, "Michael Cohen is neither a hero nor a patriot".

It might surprise you to learn that Trump's hot take is at odds with legal experts and facts.

Cohen's cooperation with Mueller's investigation has prompted speculation that he may have implicated President Trump in criminal behavior. Nicolas Roos, the assistant USA attorney who prosecuted Cohen in the Southern District, asserted that allowing Cohen to engage in "selective cooperation" would "send the wrong message" that such behavior is rewarded.

Cohen pleaded guilty in NY in August, saying that "Individual-1" (widely identified as Trump) schemed to silence two women about affairs with the Republican candidate before the 2016 election.

Trump, in his tweets, did not address Cohen's claim, nor what NY prosecutors say was then-candidate Trump's involvement in making a $150,000 payment to McDougal through American Media Inc.
