Stop-gap measure brings temporary end to government shutdown

Trump outlined a plan to end the government shutdown on Saturday, offering congressional Democrats three years of legislative relief for 700,000 DACA recipients - including protection from deportation - and an extension of legal residence for people living in the country under "Temporary Protective Status" designations.

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter suggested on Twitter that she views Trump as "the biggest wimp" to serve as president.

"We don't think we caved", said another senior White House official.

Democrats opposed his demand, triggering a five-week standoff that damaged the economy, hurt many federal workers and tested Americans' patience with delays to air travel, closures of national parks and other disruptions. "Let's make that very clear".

He repeatedly alluded to a "powerful alternative" that he "did not want to use this time" - a reference to a declaration of national emergency that would enable him to order USA troops to build the border wall against the legislation of Congress and the House.

"This was in no way a concession, " Trump said in a tweet late Friday, fending off critics who wanted him to keep fighting.

Representative Cheri Bustos, an Illinois Democrat and chairwoman of the Democrats' campaign arm, echoed that sentiment after the shutdown deal was announced: "The American people sent us here to govern with a objective - to bring down the cost of health care, invest in our infrastructure and clean up the corruption in Washington", she said.

He previously has indicated he was considering an emergency declaration to circumvent congressional funding powers if lawmakers do not fund his wall, an action that nearly certainly would be swiftly challenged by Democrats as exceeding his authority under the U.S. Constitution.

For weeks, Trump said he would not sign a funding measure that did not include money for a border wall.

Trump is demanding United States dollars 5.7 billion of funding to build the wall, but the Democrats have refused.

However, social media users were quick to point out what they considered to be Trump's defeat.

Mulvaney said that if the legislation Congress sends to Trump's desk is unsatisfactory, Trump could veto it, which would result in another shutdown.

"I don't see this as any power play", she told reporters Friday. "I believe that's what he's doing".

"There are some pots of money that are easier to get to than others", he said, adding that the administration has looked at ways to mitigate the likely court challenge to an emergency declaration.

However, at the end of his appearance, Trump made a strong warning about what will happen if a fair deal can not be reached. "There is wisdom here in what he did".

Trump still made the case for a border wall and maintained that he might again shut down the government over it. She is referring to the recently debated State of the Union address - a speech which both President Trump and Speaker Pelosi are simply kicking down the road.

Even Dobbs, over on Fox Business Network, commented that Trump's reversal was a "victory for Nancy Pelosi", and "to deny it is to try to escape from reality".

The president indicated Friday that if lawmakers do not offer funding for a wall when the three-week measure ends on February 15, another shutdown could begin or he could declare an emergency to build the wall.

At the time, Republican Mark Meadows cheered Trump for digging in his heels, saying that the time to fight the fight for a wall had arrived.

DACA refers to the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which offered a no-deportation guarantee to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants whose parents brought them into the U.S.as minors. He also threatened to resume the shutdown on February 15 if he does not get what he wants. "I hope he doesn't go there".
