TSA workers are required to show up for work during the shutdown but don't get paid.

Working without compensation is especially devastating for the thousands of federal employees who live paycheck-to-paycheck.

While 99.7 percent of travelers waited less than 30 minutes in screening lines, three airports recorded maximum waits exceeding that time on Thursday. The MyTSA app gives you an estimate on how much time you should leave before your flight.

On Thursday, 6.4 percent of US airport security officers were off the job, nearly twice the 3.8 percent on the same day a year earlier, the Transportation Security Administration said in a release.

With 47 minutes, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport topped the list of maximum wait times for major USA airports on Thursday.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers work at a checkpoint in John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, the United States, Jan. 20, 2019. The agency said it anticipates clearing more than 8 million people in the four days of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, an increase of almost 11 percent over previous year. An advisory on the TSA Twitter page urged passengers to arrive early for updates.

It estimated that between Friday and Monday, more than 8 million passengers will be screened at security checkpoints nationwide, an increase of 10.8 percent from the same period a year ago.

In an interview with Yahoo Finance, a TSA spokesperson said about 6,270 people called in sick or missed work between Monday and Wednesday, and they expected the number to rise as more TSA workers are strained financially.
