US, S. Korean foreign ministers discuss 2nd Trump-Kim summit

Kang and Pompeo assessed the North Korean official's trip to the U.S. as "successful" and agreed to cooperate closely on a second Pyongyang-Washington summit so that it will lead to the faithful implementation of the agreement made at the previous one in Singapore on June 12 a year ago, according to the ministry.

Pompeo and Kim were expected to discuss matters including the date and venue for a possible second meeting between Trump and top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un after their first summit in Singapore previous year.

Trump and Kim held their first meeting in Singapore in June.

While Kim was wrapping his three-day visit to Washington and flying back to Pyongyang on Saturday, North Korea's Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son-hui kicked off negotiations with South Korea's Lee Do-hoon, special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the US's special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, in Sweden on Saturday.

Washington-Pyongyang negotiations are being closely observed by Tokyo, as it waits to discuss with North Korea about the fate of abducted Japanese.

North Korea has called on Washington to begin lifting sanctions it has imposed unilaterally, and other global sanctions it has worked at the United Nations to implement - a demand the USA has rejected until it achieves the full and verifiable denuclearization of the North.

Many observers say this is an intermediate stage to the complete denuclearization of North Korea, and that the U.S.is taking the "phased" approach. It is believed that the Japanese nationals were kidnapped to obtain their identities so that the North Korean penetration agents could misuse those identities in South Korea. The announcement was made after a one-hour-and-half meeting between Trump and Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of North Korea's ruling Korean Workers' Party Central Committee, in the Oval Office. He met with President Donald Trump as well.
