Led Warsaw summit vies with parallel Syria talks

Front row third from left, United States Vice President Mike Pence, fourth from left, Poland's President Andrzej Duda, fifth from left, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and sixth from left, United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, pose for a group photo at the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland, Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019.

The comments were made to reporters on the sidelines of the Warsaw Middle East ministerial following Netanyahu's meeting with the Sultanate of Oman's Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Yusuf bin Alawi.

Washington and the European Union are at odds over U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers, which calls for Iran to curtail its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

The United States and Israel will lead a new push to pressure Iran at a conference on Thursday in Warsaw which is as notable for its absences as its attendees.

The conference came as 20 members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard were killed in a suicide attack in the southeast of the country on Wednesday.

"The Warsaw conference, I believe, is dead on arrival".

The Trump administration has sought with little success to rebut the perception that the conference is aimed at vilifying Iran, which this week marked the 40th anniversary of the Islamic revolution that overthrew the US -backed shah of Iran.

"From here I am going to a meeting with 60 foreign ministers and envoys of countries from around the world against Iran". The Polish capital is host for a two-day worldwide conference, co-organized by Poland and the United States.

Trump walked away from what he called a "terrible" 2015 deal negotiated by his predecessor Barack Obama in which Iran constrained its nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.

Netanyahu and his USA ally have sought to play up the rare public appearance of senior Arab officials at a common forum with an Israeli prime minister.

Netanyahu, who has vowed to keep striking Iranian forces until they leave war-torn Syria and has not ruled out a military strike to destroy Iran's remaining nuclear facilities, is likely to deliver a fiery address.

Senior Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi said earlier this week the agenda was "an Israeli-centric fake solution that normalizes Arab-Israeli relations at the expense of Palestinian rights". "Iran swore to destroy Israel since the Islamic Revolution 40 years ago and for the last few years they've been shooting at each other in Syria", he added.

The Israeli leader paid a rare visit a year ago to the Gulf sultanate, which has no official ties with Israel but has sought to smooth relations with powers across the region, including Iran. "We must work together for security", he said.

But outside of Israel, Iran's Arab rivals and the Trump administration, almost all countries still back an accord negotiated under previous U.S. president Barack Obama under which Iran agreed to accept tight limits to its nuclear activities in return for the easing of crippling economic sanctions.

"The ministers agreed that there is a window of opportunity to end the conflict in Yemen and to redouble their efforts to reach a political solution", they said.

At the conference, which opened Thursday morning, Netanyahu found himself siting next to the foreign minister of Yemen Hisham Sharaf.
