US airlines to offer passengers more gender options to choose from

"Customers who do not identify with a gender will have the option of selecting 'Mx.' as a title", the airline said in a statement to the Times.

American, Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska, and JetBlue airlines said they are now updating to booking tools to add new options for non-binary travelers.

The airlines said that they were making the changes to be more inclusive to a diverse range of customers. This requirement was a direct result of 9/11 when TSA created the Secure Flight vetting program, which is a behind the scenes watch list matching process that happens before passengers arrive at the airport.

The new standard will become effective on June 1, yet it is up to individual airlines to make the option available on their booking platforms, according to the A4A.

Some U.S. states and cities have offered non-binary gender options on identification cards and birth certificates.

"We certainly have a very diverse customer base". Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest and United are all members of A4A.

United Airlines plans to let people select M for male, F for female, U for undisclosed or X for unspecified from the gender menu when booking a ticket on its website or mobile app, said spokeswoman Andrea Hiller. They will also have the option of picking "Mx." as a title.

The news of these new airline options for passengers comes about two years after similar advancements in drivers licenses.

In 2017, OR became the first state to allow a third gender option on ID documents; in addition to "male" OR "female", residents also have the option of "X" for a nonspecified gender. OR started to let their residents choose to identify as neither male nor female on licenses in 2017.

Those changes led the National Center for Transgender Equality and Human Rights Campaign to recommend that transgender people carry a second identification such as a passport that shows their sex as it appears on their ticket. Since then Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, Arkansas, and Washington DC has followed suit. Now that won't be necessary, thanks to the new changes being made with airline booking options for gender.
