James Clapper: Trump-Kim Summit 'Doomed From The Get-Go'

"Act" days after a summit between Republican President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was abruptly cut off after they failed to reach a deal for the reclusive communist nation to give up its nuclear weapons.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump take a walk after their first meeting at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi hotel, on February 28, 2019.

During an interview on Sunday, Bolton defended the President in "protecting and advancing" American national interests while in Hanoi.

Thirdly, Moon said, it was meaningful that the establishment of a US liaison office in the North was brought up because the space would come in handy when a team of American experts later set foot on North Korean soil to observe Pyongyang's demolition of its nuclear facilities, materials and weapons.

Mr Bolton was also asked if he takes North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at his word that he didn't know of Mr Warmbier's suspected torture.

"Fundamentally, in the case of all three of those countries, we've got to pursue American national interest", Bolton said.

According to senior American officials, during the week leading up to the Hanoi summit, the North Koreans had demanded the lifting of effectively all UN Security Council economic sanctions imposed on Pyongyang since March 2016.

At the meeting, South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said the proposed talks, which could include civilian experts from the US and South Korea, would help settle differences over how much sanctions relief Washington should provide to North Korea in exchange for nuclear disarmament steps.

"Sometimes you have to walk and this was just one of those times", Trump said on Thursday, adding that he would "rather do it right than do it fast".

A South Korean foreign ministry source while meeting with reporters said Tuesday the two sides are using diplomatic channels to discuss the implications of the second uranium enrichment facility Trump raised during the press conference in Hanoi last week. While the ultrahawkish Bolton was willing to swallow a lot to regain the ear of a White House, nodding his head on the supposed trustworthiness of Trump's dictatorial would-be allies is ... too much.

Although Trump did not say exactly how the Cohen hearings affected the summit, he said, "Such things are never done when a president is overseas".

"It was the sanctions that brought the North Koreans to the table".

But after returning to Washington, and seeing the largely negative media reaction to the summit, including about his answer about the death of college student Otto Warmbier, Trump went a step further.

Bolton was touring the Sunday political shows the morning after the US and South Korea announced an end to key annual large-scale military exercises.

While Trump has ruled out withdrawing United States troops, he has repeatedly complained about the cost of the exercises, describing them at a press conference in Hanoi as "very, very expensive". Clapper said they're important for South Korean defense.

Bolton sought to play down Saturday's announcement, however, saying the policy remained unchanged since Singapore.
