Facebook bans Louis Farrakhan, Alex Jones for hate speech

The company said it will continue to review pages, groups, content and individuals for potential violations of its hate policies.

Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader who has expressed anti-Semitic views, will also be excluded.

Facebook is also banning all fan pages dedicated to InfoWars stories and videos.

InfoWars has championed Nehlen, who was previously banned by Twitter.

"We've always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology", a spokesperson said.

Any mention of them will result in bans, too. Four pages associated with the right-wing conspiracy theorist, who also runs InfoWars, were subsequently removed. Jones was placed under a 30-day ban past year for violating community standards. Groups and events that promote Infowars or any of the banned "extremists" will be removed as well, a spokesperson told the Atlantic.

"The majority of the newly banned figures - Yiannopoulos, Loomer, Watson, Jones, and Nehlen - owed their influence to the massive reach they were allowed to cultivate through Facebook and Instagram, using their accounts to post content that dehumanized entire communities, promoted hateful conspiracy theories and radicalized audiences - all while they profited from directing people to their own websites", said Cristina López G., deputy director for extremism at Media Matters. In Jones's case, he hosted McInnes on his show late last year and promoted him on Instagram earlier this year.

Watson, a British radio host, and YouTube personality tweeted Thursday afternoon that U.S. President Donald Trump should take action against Facebook.

It is also banning Paul Nehlen, who described himself as a "pro-White Christian Candidate" when he ran for Congress and was also kicked off the website Breitbart News site a year ago for racist comments about Meghan Markle and ties to Neo-Nazis, and Paul Joseph Watson, a far-right YouTube personality and former editor of Infowars.

"I'm about to be banned", wrote Mr Yiannopoulos to his followers on Instagram. That policy may not apply to any or all of the people banned Thursday, however.
